TURA, Oct 27: National Health Mission (NHM) employees representing all districts of Garo Hills came together for the first-ever NHM Sports Meet of the region, held at the Rongrengre Artificial Turf Football Playground, Williamnagar, marking a new milestone in promoting wellness and camaraderie among health professionals.
Organised under the theme ‘Wellness through Sports, Service through Health’, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from NHM employees across the Garo Hills districts.
The sports meet was conducted in two regional segments—Garo Hills and Khasi Hills—for the entire NHM workforce of Meghalaya.
The grand finale will see the winners of both regions compete in the coming weeks. East Garo Hills District Sports Officer Babita G. Momin, who was the chief guest on the closing day, lauded the participants for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
She highlighted the government’s continued commitment to promoting physical fitness among employees and expressed optimism about extending similar initiatives to all government departments in the future.
Earlier, the event was inaugurated by Dr. Cruzie Elmina N. Sangma, District Medical & Health Officer (DM&HO), East Garo Hills, Williamnagar, who graced the occasion as Chief Guest, in the presence of Dr. John Beryl K. Marak, Superintendent of Williamnagar Civil Hospital, who attended as Special Invitee.
The primary objective of the sports meet was to encourage NHM staff to explore their talents beyond professional duties, foster team spirit, and strengthen bonds among health workers across districts through sports and recreation.
The meet concluded on a high note with spirited performances from all participating teams. South Garo Hills emerged as the Overall Champion, while East Garo Hills won the Men’s Football title with South Garo Hills finishing as Runners-Up. In Women’s Football, South Garo Hills clinched the championship, followed by North Garo Hills as Runners-Up. West Garo Hills triumphed in the Women’s Tug of War event.
Meanwhile, the organising committee expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Health Minister, the Mission Director of NHM, the DM&HO, and all Nodal Officers for their unwavering support. Special appreciation was also extended to the District Sports Officer, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar, for granting the use of the Rongrengre Artificial Turf Football Ground and for providing continuous assistance throughout the event.
