SHILLONG: Shillong Press Club defeated FKJGP 3-2 in a tiebreaker to settle a friendly football match played at Third Ground, Polo, on Wednesday.
The game was held as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the FKJGP, which will culminate on Friday.
Both teams played to their full potential in what was an electrifying contest.
FKJGP started off the match in style as they nearly scored in the second minute after Fenedy Cajee’s strong right-footer missed the target by a whisker.
Despite the pressmen keeping the majority of the possession, the NGO team countered with two quick goals in the 12th and 15th minutes.
The first was scored by Fenedy, while Vicky Nongbri doubled the lead in the space of a few minutes.
SPC, however, came back with a goal of their own in the 23rd minute, scored by Dapkupar Tariang.
The fact that they were able to pull a goal back so quickly should have given the media team a big fillip.
The scribes pressed on but the first half ended with FKJGP still leading 2-1.
Press Club finally scored the equaliser on the hour mark through midfielder Alemon Suchen.
There was also an instance when an SPC player rattled the crossbar with a blast from his right foot.
The FKJGP team could not counter the momentum going the pressmen’s way and full time ended with the two teams level on two goals apiece.
That forced a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner of the friendly and the Press Club seized the decider by the narrow margin of three goals to two.
