SHILLONG, Oct 29: As part of a central initiative ‘Special Campaign 5.0’, which aims at promoting cleanliness, reducing waste, and enhancing public participation in sustainable practices, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) NEF Region successfully organised a handicraft-making competition at a local school in Mawlai Mawroh, Shillong.
Launched on September 15, the Special Campaign 5.0 will culminate on Friday.
The theme of the competition was “Art from Waste.” Students participated enthusiastically, showcasing their creativity by turning waste materials into useful and decorative items such as battery-operated toy airplanes and windmills, beautiful vases and bouquets, picture frames, pencil holders, table calendars, and baskets.
A notable highlight of the campaign was the transformation of a small barren plot at MSWC Nongstoin depot under FCI DO, Shillong, into a green garden where cabbage and other plants are being cultivated. This practice showcases a creative and sustainable approach to land utilization and beautification.
In another unique initiative under the campaign, FCI District Office, Agartala, has undertaken the creation of a sculpture using waste materials such as old cycle tyres, waste wires, tin sheets, and an old food dish. These components will be artistically assembled to form a sculpture of a woman holding a dish symbolising creativity and resourcefulness through recycling.
Similarly, FCI RO NEF is working on developing a compost structure using scrap materials, bamboos, left-over construction material lying in the office like sand, stones and cement. The structure serves as a compost reservoir for dry leaves, grass, and weeds, contributing to organic waste management and sustainable environmental practices.
Additionally, FCI RO NEF has formed a committee comprising five female managers with an interest in gardening and environmental beautification. The committee has been tasked with enhancing the visual appeal of the office premises.
