SHILLONG, Oct 30: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday hailed the introduction of railways in his state, saying the railway line has brought multiple benefits to the state, especially by reducing the cost of goods and improving connectivity.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme held at the North Eastern Council auditorium here on Thursday, Lalduhoma said, “The coming of railways has helped in many ways, and things have become cheaper.”
Responding to a question on the ongoing debate over the introduction of railways in Meghalaya, Lalduhoma said he would not comment on the matter, as it was for the state’s leaders to decide.
However, he acknowledged that the fear of influx among sections opposing the project might be reasonable, given the absence of a regulatory mechanism like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
“In Mizoram, we have an online ILP system. Anyone visiting the state whether by road, air, or otherwise must obtain permission to enter. This system has been effective, and its implementation has no link to the introduction of railways,” he explained.
On the issue of drug trafficking, Lalduhoma, who previously served in the police force, said the Mizoram government has set up a State Security Coordination Committee under his chairmanship. The committee works in collaboration with the Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, Police, Excise Department, and NGOs.
“Earlier, all these agencies worked separately. Now, we function in a coordinated manner, and this has helped us seize many drug consignments and reduce the illegal trade. This model can be replicated anywhere in the country,” he suggested.
The Chief Minister also shared that his visit to the Land Customs Station (LCS) at Dawki on Wednesday to study the facilities there was to facilitate a similar initiative in Mizoram.
“The infrastructure there is quite good, but due to strained relations between India and Bangladesh, trade volume has decreased. Once relations normalise, I believe trade will pick up again,” he said.
