Hundreds drawn to Riangiong Food fest

NONGSTOIN: The Lyngam Indigenous Federation (LIF) in collaboration with the North East Slow Food Agro Biodiversity (NESFAB) and the Shallang Area Local Labourers Association (SALLA) organized a Food Fest at Riangiong under Umdang in West Khasi Hills on Thursday.

Twenty four stalls showcasing mouth-watering delicacies from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills were well received by people at the fest. Some of the food varieties were so rare that they had almost disappeared from the Khasi society. Some of the rare dishes displayed were Irumha, Hursuprong, Hurbrang, Iangriang, Jaktang.

Besides the fest, a meeting of sorts at the venue of the fest was also held, where N Nongsiang, general secy of the LIF was the chairman. Speakers at the meeting included M Rashir, E Mawsor, K Lyngdoh Lyngkhoi (Associate- Training of NESFAB).

Lyngkhoi in his speech asserted that food played a vital role in the cultural and traditional aspects of a society. He added that through food, one could connect to their roots and was in some way a means to remain in touch with our ancestors.
