SHILLONG, Nov 3: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has urged citizens to take an active role in nation-building and to work collectively with the government in addressing key challenges such as employment and social development.
Speaking at the Convocation Day of Synod College here on Monday, Syiem emphasised that the issue of employment remains one of the major concerns that the incumbent government will need to address.
The Nongpoh MLA stressed that citizens also share responsibility in ensuring the success of governance initiatives. “We, as citizens of the state, must take responsibility to ensure that we work together with the incumbent government for the common good,” Syiem remarked.
Encouraging political participation to the students, he cautioned against public indifference and urged people not to withdraw from civic duties.
“Don’t ever say that you are not going to vote in the next election or that you won’t listen to the speeches of leaders. We cannot reach anywhere by just sitting at home, reading newspapers, and pointing fingers at others,” he stated.
Syiem further highlighted the value of constructive criticism in strengthening democracy.
“It’s good to have a constructive opposition. Criticism, when done positively, helps the system grow stronger,” he said, noting that criticism should not be seen as a personal attack but as a means to improve governance.
Calling for unity and social reform, Syiem urged citizens to rise above comparison and negativity within society. “We must face challenges together and do away with the unhealthy attitudes that hold us back. Only then can we move forward as a community,” he added.
The Convocation Day of Synod College marks the graduation of 68 students who successfully completed their Master’s degrees in Education and Political Science.
The event also saw the felicitation of the 4th and 5th rank holders in the recently declared NEHU results, recognising their outstanding academic performance.
Adding to the day’s significance, a special book release was held to showcase the scholarly works presented during the two-day National Seminar cum 29th North East India Education Society Conference, organised by the college on April 3 and 4.
The seminar, themed ‘Empowering Education for a Developed India,’ brought together educators and experts to deliberate on the evolving landscape of education, and the released publication encapsulates these valuable insights.
Synod College Principal Dr Gayreen Lyngdoh and former NEHU Pro-VC, Sherwin May Sungoh, along with faculties’ members were also present on the occasion.
