TURA, Nov 3: An FIR was filed against one Anwar Islam, a timber ‘smuggler’, for allegedly threatening social activist Jaynie N Sangma with a machete when an attempt was made to detain his vehicle laden with illegal timber.
The activist registered the FIR with the Officer in-charge of Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills on October 29, the day of the incident.
According to the FIR, Jaynie, along with her driver was returning to Tura from Rajabala via the Batabari road when they came across a pick-up truck bearing registration number-ML08 B-4111 at Sidakandi village. The vehicle drew their attention after its occupants allegedly fled on seeing them, prompting them to check.
A thorough search of the abandoned vehicle revealed that it was full of logs. Later, Anwar Islam, the owner of the vehicle who came to the site with his wife, tried to bribe them with an amount of Rs 10,000 in return for the release of his vehicle. When Jaynie refused, Islam grabbed a machete from the vehicle and allegedly threatened her.
