SHILLONG, Nov 4: The state government has sanctioned Rs 45 crore to repair/resurface the major roads in Shillong instead of constructing smart roads in the city.
Informing this here on Tuesday, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the government has sanctioned around Rs 45 crore in this regard.
Asked about the old and outdated public transportation system in Shillong, the minister said it was due to the perennial traffic congestion in the city.
“We are coming up with several parking lots and once the New Shillong Township is completed in the next 5-6 years, most of the government offices and establishments will be shifted there and traffic will reduce in the city,” he said, adding that the government has been holding talks with stakeholders to discuss new strategies and plans to ease the traffic congestion.
Asked about the Polo Shopping Mall which is yet to be opened after its inauguration, Dhar said a tender has been floated to operate the place.
“Last time, the rates were high and we received only a few responses and hence we have reduced the rates this time,” he added.
