SHILLONG, Nov 15: The Cherry Blossom Festival at Ward’s Lake is already a visual delight—but this year, it’s the aromatic charms of Japanese cuisine with a distinctive Meghalaya touch that’s turning heads.
In a proud moment for the state, homegrown chef Santosh Sangma showcased his skills at the Japanese Arena, drawing praise from none other than Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
“Happy to see our homegrown talent, Chef Santosh Sangma, showcasing his skills at the Japanese Arena for the #CherryBlossomFestival at Ward’s Lake, Shillong,” the chief minister wrote in a social media post, accompanied by a video of the chef in action.
He went on: “Renowned in the culinary world, Chef Santosh is in Shillong as the Master of Japanese Cuisine for this year’s festival. Wishing him the very best!”
Chef Santosh, who runs a popular restaurant in Bangalore, was introduced to visitors as a rising star in the world of experimental gastronomy. What unfolded next was a scene straight out of a heartwarming homecoming—a gesture that may mark a turning point in the state’s culinary landscape.
In the video clip shared by Conrad Sangma, the chief minister can be heard asking if Santosh would be interested in coming back and setting up a restaurant in Meghalaya. The chef, with an unmistakable spark of promise, replied, “I will get the opportunity to do something in Shillong.”
That brief exchange has now ignited anticipation among food lovers and locals alike, who hope this moment could usher in a wave of gourmet innovation within the state. For young chefs from Meghalaya, Santosh’s rise and possible return stands as both inspiration and an invitation to dream locally, but cook globally.
As festivals go, this could be one of those that serve not just aesthetic beauty, but a taste of something more lasting—a vision of a vibrant culinary culture rooted in homegrown pride.
