SHILLONG, Nov 18: NPP’s Rongjeng MLA Jim M. Sangma on Tuesday asserted that the Congress party’s attempt to revive its organisation in Garo Hills ahead of the upcoming GHADC polls will have little to no impact on his party’s electoral prospects.
Sangma said the Congress, often referred to as the grand old party, has been making visible efforts to regain its foothold in the region, especially with senior leaders like Zenith M. Sangma returning to its fold. However, he maintained that these developments are unlikely to alter the political landscape in any significant way.
According to Jim Sangma, while Congress working president Saleng A. Sangma performed impressively in the recent Lok Sabha elections, that success cannot be translated into a renewed wave for the party in the GHADC polls.
“One good performance in an MP election doesn’t mean that the same sentiment will continue at every level,” he remarked, emphasising that local issues and grassroots engagement will play a far bigger role in the district council elections.
He further expressed confidence that his party remains strong on the ground and that voters in Garo Hills are aware of the work being carried out by the current leadership.
Sangma added that the GHADC elections will be determined by performance and credibility, not by attempts at political revival.
It may be added that the Congress party has received a “shot in the arm” ahead of the upcoming GHADC elections due to a wave of “political homecomings” by several key leaders who previously left the party, including former MLA Zenith M. Sangma. Two-time MLA Winnerson Sangma and Zenith’s wife, Sadhiarani Sangma are also likely to join the Congress by the end of November, bolstering the grand old party’s prospects ahead of the council polls scheduled in early 2026.
