Govt plans to close down redundant undertakings

SHILLONG: The State Government is contemplating to close down several unproductive undertakings.

Indicating this here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, “We are working on a formula in this regard.”

He said that process had been on to close down a few of undertakings “which are considered to be redundant and not capable of generating anymore income even after restructuring.”

Informing that the Government had already closed down the Electronic Corporation Limited (ECL), the Chief Minister said that the Bamboo Chips Corporation (BCC) would meet the same fate shortly.

He said that Government was taking some measures to revive the Meghalaya Minerals Development Corporation (MMDC).

“MMDC will be playing a crucial role once the Government implements the mining policy. With this, MMDC will be earning huge revenue and it will become a profit-making unit,” the Chief Minister said adding that similar initiatives would be taken to revive the Meghalaya Industries Development Corporation (MIDC).

When ask if the Government is contemplating to close down the MTC, he said that the MTC is the arm of the Government which can generate revenue if it is run professionally.
