SHILLONG, Nov 22: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Saturday announced that the state government will provide jobs to medal winners in the National Games and Asian Games under the recently launched Meghalaya Outstanding Sportspersons Direct Appointment Policy.
Speaking at a programme in Mawprem after inaugurating a futsal turf and a state-of-the-art basketball court, he said the government is laying focus on youth development through sports.
Informing that the department’s budget has been increased to over ₹400 crore to support these initiatives, he revealed that a football stadium would soon be constructed in Shillong.
Meanwhile, the minister said that drug mafias are targeting Meghalaya because the majority of the population comprises young people.
Shylla noted that 60 per cent of the state’s population is below the age of 35, making them prime targets for these criminal networks.
Earlier, local MLA Paul Lyngdoh stated that the newly opened sports infrastructure would bring out fresh talent and bring laurels to the constituency.
He added that the government intends to give the best possible opportunities to the youths of Meghalaya.
Former Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, who was also present, remarked that sports bring discipline and develop the personality of the youths.
Meanwhile, to mark the occasion, a futsal match was played between Shillong Lajong FC and Langsning FC.
