SHILLONG, Nov 22: Fisheries Minister Timothy D. Shira has called for the protection of freshwater ecosystems while highlighting the growing potential of Meghalaya’s fisheries sector.
Speaking as the chief guest at a special programme organised by the Fisheries department to observe World Fisheries Day on Friday, Shira appreciated the increasing enthusiasm among the youths to take up aquaculture. He said it is a positive shift that aligns with the state’s vision of sustainable rural entrepreneurship.
The minister noted that fisheries are deeply linked to the socio-economic well-being of rural communities, making it vital to balance development with conservation.
Shira also outlined various government initiatives, including the promotion of scientific aquaculture, establishment of hatcheries, capacity-building for farmers and the strengthening of community-managed fisheries.
He stated that the state government is committed, under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), to enhancing fish production and improving incomes for the farming community.
Pointing to Meghalaya’s pristine rivers, wetlands, hill streams and favourable climatic conditions, the minister remarked that these natural resources provide immense potential for the sector’s expansion.
He also assured continued support through infrastructure development, training, credit facilitation and technological innovation.
Meanwhile, Principal Secretary of the Fisheries department, Harish Chandra Chaudhary, highlighted the close link between healthy ecosystems and a thriving fisheries sector.
He noted that the department is making significant progress under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and the Fisheries Minister, with strong support from the Centre.
Chaudhary also informed the gathering that the state government is finalising a draft Bill for the conservation, development and sustainable use of resources in the fisheries sector.
The legislation, he added, will focus on sustainable management, regulation and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.
It may be mentioned that the event, which focused on sustainable fisheries, livelihood promotion and ecological conservation, was attended by fish farmers, officials and stakeholders.
