SHILLONG, Nov 24: In the wake of a horrific accident that left two students fighting for their lives, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has imposed strict new traffic rules with immediate effect.
From Monday, no vehicle is allowed to cross the 30 kmph speed limit inside the campus, and helmets are now compulsory for every two-wheeler rider and cyclist. Violators will face disciplinary action, university authorities warned.
The crackdown follows the incident on November 17 in which a drunken security guard rammed his car into the two students near Gate-II. CCTV footage of the crash, which has been widely circulated among students, shows the car ramming into the victims with terrifying force.
The two students are now out of danger and continuing treatment at Nazareth Hospital.
A senior NEHU official told reporters, “We are adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards reckless driving and unsafe behaviour on campus.”
Bright new signboards spelling out the speed limit and mandatory helmet rule were installed at key points across the sprawling campus on Monday itself.
Students have welcomed the move, though many pointed out that rules already existed on paper. “The problem was never lack of rules — it was lack of enforcement,” said a third-year student who requested anonymity.
