Several houses gutted in Malki fire

SHILLONG: Several houses were gutted by fire at Pdeng Shnong locality of Malki here on Friday night.
According to the residents, the incident occurred at around 10.30 pm and it took more than one hour to douse the fire with winds being the major hurdle for the fire fighters. The exact reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained, an official with the fire service said.
The affected were all Assam type houses.
The residents complained that the fire tenders reached late even after information was passed on in time. A resident also alleged that the first fire tender reached the area without any hose. A senior official with the fire service said that the allegations will be verified.
The residents of the area helped the fire fighters in dousing the flames.
Electricity went off in the area from 9 pm to 10 pm on Friday and the incident occurred at around 10.30 pm after the power was restored.
