SHILLONG, Dec 6: Lakme Academy Shillong has launched a three-year bachelor’s degree programme in Beauty & Wellness, marking a major milestone as the academy celebrated its 6th anniversary. The degree, which is the first of its kind in Meghalaya and offered through Scope Global Skill University (SGSU), expands academic avenues for aspiring professionals in the fast-growing Beauty & Wellness sector.
Speaking at the anniversary event, Lakme Academy Shillong director Rowina L. Kharbteng recalled that the academy was inaugurated in 2019 and has since grown to become one of India’s leading beauty training institutions, with more than 150 centres nationwide.
She highlighted that Lakme Academy Shillong was the first in the state to introduce certified professional courses in Cosmetology, Hair Care, Skin Care, Makeup and Nails. All programmes are accredited by the Beauty & Wellness Skill Sector Council of India, ensuring nationally recognised training standards.
Kharbteng emphasised that the academy’s curriculum is crafted to prepare students for careers in the fashion, beauty, film, and entertainment industries. “Our endeavour is to groom passion, skill and talent, and to deliver opportunities that make the world a more beautiful place,” she said.
The academy also provides hands-on exposure through live projects, backstage events and competitions, thereby allowing students to gain real-world experience.
Highlighting the rapid rise of the Beauty & Wellness industry as a billion-dollar global sector, Kharbteng noted that the academy has trained hundreds of students over the past six years, many of whom are now employed across the industry or have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs. “With the experience we have gained, we now look forward to collaborating with the Government of Meghalaya to ensure that the youth of our state are not left behind,” she added.
