SHILLONG, Dec 8: The Law Department is examining all options to file a strong appeal before the Supreme Court against its September 1 order that makes the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for all in-service teachers to continue in service.
Law Department sources said the state government favours a modification in the judgment. The matter has been listed for hearing in January.
The Meghalaya SSA Schools’ Association has filed a review petition seeking reconsideration of the judgment.
Sources said some reviews and matters are pending in other High Courts, and the state government is also awaiting some clarity. The sources further stated that there are timelines for the teachers to get their TET qualification, and a lot of issues have arisen following the court judgement.
One of the issues is regarding the special category of teachers, and the Supreme Court is examining the matter.
“We are also examining how to approach the matter and what will be the best way to get some relief for our teachers,” a source said, adding that the government is in no rush but weighing each and every option on how to move forward with the appeal.
“We are also collecting different data. We will have to place authentic data before the Supreme Court or else, we will fail,” the source added.
Meghalaya has over 32,000 government teachers who have not yet cleared TET and they are likely to be affected by the court’s order.
