NEW DELHI, Dec 9: The Pakistani Army is reportedly planning decisive measures against former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, the PTI, amid growing concerns over his defiance and popular support.
Since his ouster and arrest, the army has held several meetings with Khan, seeking negotiations, but he has remained unyielding.
Officials suggest the army may attempt one final discussion, and if unsuccessful, could ban the PTI or push for Khan to face treason charges.
The army is portraying Khan as a security risk, alleging he could leak national secrets and questioning his mental stability
He was even offered safe passage abroad with political asylum, which he refused.
The establishment is also critical of Khan’s past ties with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Afghan Taliban.
Under his leadership, relations with these groups were normal, but TTP attacks have surged nearly 500%, causing significant setbacks for the military.
Experts warn that prosecuting Khan or banning the PTI could provoke widespread public unrest, given his popularity as a cricket icon and former World Cup winner.
The establishment is also linking Khan to strained international relations, including tensions with the US and China during his tenure.
Preparations are underway to build a case against him while shaping public perception, highlighting TTP resurgence, foreign policy issues, and national security concerns. (IANS)
