SHILLONG, Dec 10: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has announced that black flags and black banners will be displayed across all major locations in the seven northeastern states on Thursday as part of its continued protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said December 11 has been marked as a “black day” for the region, recalling the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha in 2019 despite strong opposition from indigenous communities.
“The Government of India did not pay heed to our concerns and went ahead with passing this draconian law,” Jyrwa stated.
He said the annual observance serves as a reminder to the people of the Northeast of the “political injustice” inflicted upon indigenous populations and a message to the Union government that the region continues to oppose the CAA.
“This observation is to remind our people and future generations of yet another political injustice perpetrated against the indigenous peoples of the Northeast. NESO calls upon everyone in the region to support this observation and continue fighting for our just and God-given rights,” Jyrwa added.
