Madrid, Dec 16: Rayo Vallecano battled to a 0-0 draw at home against Real Betis on Monday, extending their winless streak in La Liga to six matches. The result leaves Rayo struggling to regain momentum, while Betis secured a point to maintain their position in the upper half of the table.
Rayo, who had managed only a single goal in their previous five league outings, looked set to end their drought in the first half but were repeatedly thwarted by an inspired performance from Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles. The home side suffered an early blow when their top scorer, Jorge de Frutos, was forced off after just 18 minutes, limiting their attacking options and putting additional pressure on their midfield and forwards.
The second half saw Rayo come close to breaking the deadlock, with Isi Palazón rattling the woodwork, hitting the post in a moment that epitomised the team’s misfortune in front of goal. Betis, meanwhile, grew more assertive after the interval, creating a few promising chances, but the visiting side was unable to convert any of them into a decisive strike.
Despite both teams showing periods of attacking intent, defensive organisation prevailed on either end, leaving fans with a goalless stalemate. The point moves Betis up to sixth place in the league standings, keeping them in contention for European qualification spots, while Rayo Vallecano remain 13th, just three points clear of the relegation zone, highlighting the urgency for a turnaround in form in the coming fixtures.
The draw extends Rayo’s La Liga struggles and emphasizes the need for clinical finishing and injury management, especially with key players like Jorge de Frutos unavailable. (AP)
