TURA, Dec 19: The Meghalaya Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday announced five more candidates for the upcoming 2026 Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
The names were released during the second phase of the party’s candidate rollout at an NCP State Election Committee meeting held at Dachi Lake, led by State President Omilo K. Sangma.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma stated that the party’s primary agenda is to advocate for the indigenous people of Garo Hills. He highlighted the long-standing demand for a separate electoral roll for the District Council and the codification of Garo Customary Law.
“The GHADC was established in 1952, yet nearly 74 years later, the Customary Law has still not been prepared,” Sangma said. He criticized successive Chief Ministers for failing to address these two key issues despite decades of administration.
The NCP President appealed to the public to unite behind the party to resolve these pending matters.
The five candidates announced are Nikjrang A. Sangma (Silkigre), Menthu M. Marak (Babelapara), Matgrik K. Sangma (Jengjal), Jison D. Marak (Boldamgre), and Babulal N. Marak (Gasuapara).
Sangma added that the NCP intends to field candidates in all GHADC constituencies.
