TURA, Dec 19: Local units of the FKJGP and GSMC from Nongalbibra, South Garo Hills, have demanded an immediate halt to illegal coal transportation, citing overloaded trucks and unauthorised night-time movement.
In a complaint to the officer-in-charge of the Jadi Outpost, the groups alleged that heavy trucks are causing extensive damage to NH-217 between Jadi and Gasuapara, as well as the Dangsa Awe-Karonggre stretch.
The organisations claimed that approximately 50 to 60 coal trucks operate along these routes daily, many without valid documentation. They pointed out that recently repaired road surfaces are already beginning to peel off due to the weight of the vehicles. “The illegal activity is taking place despite the road being under repair. Recently repaired stretches have already begun to peel off due to the plying of the heavy trucks,” they stated.
Contending that the unchecked movement violates transport regulations and poses a threat to public safety and infrastructure, the groups called for regular night patrols and vehicle checks to verify permits, challans, and load limits for all coal-laden vehicles.
