TURA, Dec 30: West Garo Hills district administration has imposed a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border, effective immediately, citing the heightened security risk posed by the prevailing situation in neighboring Bangladesh.
The curfew applies from 6 PM to 5 AM daily and covers a 200-meter radius from the Zero Line (international border) within the West Garo Hills.
District Magistrate In-charge Mary Lisa K Marak issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The directive follows assessments indicating that the border areas are vulnerable to illegal infiltration, movement of insurgent groups, and smuggling networks, particularly during night hours.
The night curfew prohibits movement of individuals across the international border with the intention of illegally entering Indian territory or crossing into Bangladesh; unauthorised assembly of five or more persons, and the carrying of sticks, rods, stones, or any other items that may be used as weapons in or around the border area; besides illegal activities, including the smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, fish, dry fish, cigarettes, and other prohibited items.
The district magistrate in-charge stated that these measures are necessary to prevent uncontrolled cross-border infiltration and maintain peace and tranquility in the district.
