Shillong, Jan 2: The National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) on Thursday strongly condemned the brutal assault on a student from Tripura that led to his death in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
At the same time, the NPYF urged the Uttarakhand government to take immediate and decisive measures to ensure the safety of students from the North Eastern.
Expressing deep anguish over the incident, NPYF national president Nicky Nongkhlaw conveyed his condolences to the family of the deceased, Anjel Chakma, and described the killing as deeply disturbing and unacceptable. He said such incidents are not isolated but part of a recurring pattern of violence and harassment faced by youths from the northeast in different parts of the country.
“The repeated targeting of students from the north eastern region is a serious matter of concern and must be addressed with urgency,” Nongkhlaw said.
Condemning the incident in the strongest terms, the NPYF national president expressed hope that such acts of violence would not be repeated in the future.
Nongkhlaw said he has written to the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, urging the state government to treat the case with utmost seriousness, ensure the immediate arrest of all those involved, and allow the law to take its full course.
He further observed that attacks against people from the North Eastern region stem from a lack of awareness and understanding, despite the fact that citizens from the region are an integral part of the nation.
Nongkhlaw called upon the authorities to promote greater dialogue, sensitisation, and awareness to bridge this gap and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Reiterating the NPYF’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of north eastern youths, Nongkhlaw stressed that ensuring the safety of students studying outside the region must be treated as a priority by all state governments.
