Shillong, Jan 2: In a rare incident, an elderly couple from Mawlai Kynton Massar passed away within hours of each other on the first day of the year, leaving behind a legacy that has deeply moved the local community.
Donbor Kharkongor (72), fondly known as Paheh, and his wife Dipsy Shabong (82), lovingly called Meiheh, breathed their last on the same day, with a gap of just over six hours between their deaths.
The niece of the wife, Mondalin Shabong, said that her uncle passed away around 12.30 p.m., while her aunt passed away at around 7 p.m.
The couple, who shared nearly five decades of togetherness, were known for their deep affection and mutual care.
Although they did not have biological children, their bond was described as strong and unwavering.
They had been living in Mawlai Kynton Massar Block-A after shifting from Laban.
Family members recalled that the couple supported and cared for each other through sickness and old age, always standing by one another with the support of relatives and well-wishers.
The mortal remains of the couple will be laid to rest on Saturday at the cemetery of the Presbyterian Church, Mawlai Kynton Massar.
