SHILLONG, Jan 4: Animal lovers and dog feeders on Sunday protested in Shillong against a Supreme Court directive ordering the removal of stray dogs from public places and their relocation to shelters after sterilisation and vaccination under ABC Rules, 2023. Ahead of the January 7 hearing, protesters gathered at Khyndai Lad, demanding a stay on what they termed mass removal of community dogs. They said the order was impractical, lacked data on dog population, and could increase dog-bite risks.
Protesters stressed that vaccination and sterilisation—not relocation—were proven, humane solutions, citing successful models from Goa, Mumbai, and Sikkim.
