Guwahati, Jan 9: A delegation of Assam Opposition parties on Friday lodged a first information report (FIR) at Dispur police station here, accusing the ruling BJP of conspiring to delete names of genuine voters from the electoral rolls ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.
The Opposition party leaders alleged in the police complaint that state BJP president Dilip Saikia had directed party MLAs to take necessary steps for deleting names of voters in 60 legislative Assembly constituencies and also entrusted Minister Ashok Singhal (during a Zoom meeting on January 4, 2026) to carry out the deletion process.
Terming the alleged plan of the ruling party to delete the names of supporters of Opposition parties as an evil design, the party leaders stated that the video conference (VC) footage, involving Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, should be secured immediately and preserved “as it contains crucial evidence”.
“This is nothing but a larger conspiracy to delete the names of large numbers of genuine voters from the electoral rolls. Therefore, the culprits and conspirators should be booked under the penal law so that a free, fair and transparent exercise of Special Revision can be done in the state of Assam,” the FIR addressed to the officer-in-charge of Dispur police station, read.
“Therefore, you are requested to register a case under the proper sections of the penal law and take necessary steps to book the conspirators to save democracy,” it read.
The Opposition delegation, led by senior Congress leader and chairman of APCC election committee Ripun Bora, also comprised Congress MP Rakibul Hussain; Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Barthakur Goswami; Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi; CPI (M) secretary Suprakash Talukdar besides members of the Raijor Dal and CPI (ML).
Notably, a Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls is underway in Assam, with the final voter list to be published on February 10, 2026.
The Assam Assembly elections are likely to be held in March-April, 2026.
