Tura, Jan 9: At least one person was killed while another remains in critical condition following a clash between two groups of people near the village of Rajabala in West Garo Hills (WGH) this afternoon at about 3 PM on Friday.

As per police sources, a group had proceeded this afternoon to inspect an illegal stone quarry near Rajabala and it was on their way back that they were attacked by a group of people by the AMPT roadside.

The group (members of ACHIK) were stopped by the assaulters who began to hit them following an argument. They were beaten with sticks and stones. While most of them were able to escape the assault, two were not so lucky and bore the brunt of the attack.

Following the clash, the two critically injured were immediately rushed to the Tura Civil Hospital where one of them succumbed despite efforts by the medical team.

While details are still unclear as to what exactly led to the clash, police sources confirmed the incident and an investigation has been launched immediately.

“We are looking into the matter and though we are still not very clear on what led to the clash, we should be able to get details soon. The matter is being thoroughly investigated and we will hopefully have some arrests soon,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma. Local sources stated that the situation was currently peaceful.
