SHILLONG, Jan 11: The District and Sessions Court at Khliehriat has cancelled the interim bail granted to all seven accused, including the Rangbah Shnong (village headman) of Wahsarang village in East Jaintia Hills district, in connection with the alleged brutal assault that led to the death of 41-year-old Milas Khaii, a father of 11.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar on Sunday informed that the court rejected the bail pleas and remanded all seven accused to judicial custody.
“All of them will remain in judicial custody until they are granted bail by a competent court,” the SP said.
Besides Rangbah Shnong Bhalang Lamo, the other accused have been identified as Pius Khaii, Khmih Bareh (Assistant Rangbah Shnong), Tali Lamo, Sbunglang Lamo, Ngaitlang Lamo and Sarat Lamo.
The incident occurred on the night of December 25, 2025, at Wahsarang village, when Milas Khaii and his younger brother, Kamelus Khaii, were allegedly attacked at their residence. Milas Khaii later succumbed to his injuries on January 1, 2026, while Kamelus sustained injuries and was discharged after receiving medical treatment.
An FIR was initially lodged on December 30, 2025, based on a complaint filed by Chinda Bareh, daughter of the deceased, stating that her father and uncle had been assaulted and hospitalised. Police said that on December 31, both parties reached an understanding and amicably compromised, following which the FIR was withdrawn.
However, in the early hours of January 1, at around 5:15 am, police received information that Milas Khaii had succumbed to his injuries. Following his death, police personnel were immediately deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
Subsequently, another FIR was filed the same day by Pas Khaii, leading to the registration of Khliehriat Police Station Case No. 01(01)/2026 under Sections 105 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
