Pennsylvania farm show mullet contest pays tribute to ‘Joe Dirt’

HARRISBURG, Jan 13: The Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg celebrated the enduring—but often ridiculed—mullet hairstyle on Monday with a lively contest that drew around 150 competitors and over a thousand spectators.
The short-front, long-back haircut, popularized by Canadian hockey players and hair metal bands, was showcased in the third annual “mullet contest,” where participants were judged on style, creativity, presentation, and overall commitment to the look.
The top prize, a Corvette rear bumper, went to 10-year-old Drew Fleschut of Dallas, Pennsylvania, who paid homage to the movie character Joe Dirt with a red-and-black outfit and a replica of Joe’s signature mop.
Contest judge Brittany Goldberg, owner of Philadelphia’s Heavy Metal Hair Salon, emphasized that the event is “for fun,” highlighting camaraderie and humor over competition.
The contest featured a variety of entertaining antics, including magic tricks, customized T-shirts, a “skullet” for a balding participant, nose-picking, dancing, and shirt-ripping in pro-wrestling style.
Competitors spanned multiple ages and backgrounds, many with personal stories behind their mullets.
Seven-year-old Ben Barley sported a “MULLET LIFE” T-shirt and said he had been growing his hair for two years, while 43-year-old Kyle Wertman cited pro-wrestling legend Hacksaw Jim Duggan as inspiration.
Fourteen-year-old Brayden Shaner of Lancaster spent four years cultivating his mullet and placed third in the teen category.
Parents also brought young children, like three-year-old Mason, whose hair grew longer at the back than the front, naturally creating a mullet.
The mullet has a long cultural history, though the Oxford English Dictionary credits the Beastie Boys’ 1994 song “Mullet Head” for popularizing the term
Despite its humorous and often derogatory connotation, the hairstyle remains a cultural icon.
Open to participants beyond Pennsylvania, the contest demonstrates the mullet’s wide appeal and enduring popularity, celebrating individuality, nostalgia, and a shared sense of fun.
The event has become one of the Farm Show’s most anticipated and entertaining attractions, delighting audiences with creativity and playful rebellion against conventional fashion norms. (AP)
