SHILLONG, Jan 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday asserted that Meghalaya’s 443-km international boundary with Bangladesh is under constant watch, with all agencies on high alert. While border management falls primarily under the central government and the BSF, Sangma maintained that the state has implemented every precautionary measure from its side.
“The Government of Meghalaya, the BSF, and all concerned agencies are extremely alert,” he said.
He disclosed that a high-level internal security review meeting was held on December 24 involving the BSF, Intelligence Bureau, and other officials to assess the situation. No public release followed due to the sensitive nature of internal security matters, but monitoring has remained continuous since then.
Sangma noted there is currently nothing major to cause alarm but stressed the need for sustained vigilance.
On physical infrastructure, he said fencing is complete along most stretches, with only 30-40 km remaining unfenced in scattered pockets, mainly in West Jaintia Hills and parts of South Garo Hills. Delays stem from land acquisition issues, local resistance, and ongoing court cases, though a review four months ago resolved many hurdles. The Centre is closely monitoring progress, and Sangma said he remains in regular contact with authorities in Delhi.
“We are moving very aggressively on this, and I hope the remaining work will be completed soon,” he added.
