SHILLONG, Jan 17: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday approved proposals to extend the services of a senior government official and re-engage retired officers serving in various capacities, citing the need for continuity amid ongoing projects and administrative responsibilities.
Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the Cabinet approved a three-month extension of service for Superintending Engineer K. Wahlang in the Directorate of Urban Affairs.
He explained that the decision was necessitated by the large number of projects currently underway and that Wahlang’s continued service would help ensure smooth implementation and uninterrupted functioning of these projects.
“The extension is essential to maintain continuity and to ensure the timely execution of works that are already in progress,” the chief minister said.
The Cabinet also approved the re-engagement and extension of services of two retired officials.
Robert Lyngdoh will continue as Officer on Special Duty and Ex-Officio Secretary in the Planning department and Meghalaya Age Limited, while Bruce P. Marak will remain Advisor to the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project, a World Bank-funded initiative.
“We have decided to extend the services of Robert Lyngdoh  and Bruce P. Marak, both retired Chief Engineers, in view of their experience and the importance of the assignments they are handling,” Sangma said.
In another key decision, the Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Border Areas Development Service (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
The chief minister described the move as a routine but important administrative measure aimed at clearly defining service conditions, including promotions and related matters.
The Cabinet has also directed all departments to ensure that their service rules are properly framed and placed before the Cabinet for approval to bring clarity and uniformity in service-related issues.
The Cabinet further cleared the Republic Day address, which will be delivered by the Governor in Shillong.
As part of the Republic Day celebrations, Cabinet ministers and other dignitaries will read out the address at official functions across different parts of the state.
