SHILLONG, Jan 16: The inauguration of the Shillong Medical College has been deferred due to repeated scheduling constraints involving central leaders, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Friday.
Sangma said the state government had been keen to hold the inauguration at an appropriate time, but election commitments in several states and other national and global engagements made it difficult to secure dates from the Prime Minister’s Office.
He added that the Union Health Minister’s office was also requested to coordinate a visit for the formal launch.
Sangma informed that the Health Minister was earlier expected to inaugurate the medical college on January 16 or 17. However, around the same time, information was received about a possible Cabinet Committee meeting, which led to a postponement of plans. Although the Cabinet meeting was later deferred, the Health Minister had already rescheduled his programme and was unable to revise the dates again.
Clarifying the situation, the Chief Minister said the delay was due to date-related issues rather than communication gaps. He expressed hope that the inauguration could now be organised sometime in early February, once the current busy schedule and recess period are over.
