JOWAI: The bandh called by Jaintia Hills Coal Miners’ and Dealers’ Association (JCMDA) opposing the NGT ban on rat hole mining in Jaintia Hills has affected normal life in the two districts on Saturday. Vehicles were off the road and shops and business establishments remained closed.

A procession was also taken out by coal traders, mine owners and all those connected with the coal business, directly or indirectly, starting from Teilang Phawa Football Ground, Dkhiah West. The rally ended at Khliehriat East, Petrol Pump, a distance of about two kilometers. As per reports, more than 25,000 people participated in the procession carrying banners which read: “Do not force us to become extremists, Please NGT, think for our daily bread”, among others.

JCMDA leaders Balios Swer, Hambertus Nongtdu, Namon Bamon, former MDC Seibor Shadap and MDC Richard Sing Lyngdoh were among those who took part in the rally.
