SHILLONG, Jan 27: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s absence in the Republic Day 2026 celebrations in Meghalaya has drawn sharp questioning from the Opposition Congress, who raised concerns over his non-attendance at the state’s major events.
Congress working president Deborah Marak stated on Tuesday that, as the head of the government, it was incumbent upon the chief minister to take the salute. However, she noted he was visibly absent from proceedings in both the Khasi Hills and Garo Hills regions.
Marak criticised the chief minister’s conduct, suggesting that by absconding during such a significant national event, he appeared to be taking both the Republic Day celebrations and the public for granted. Demanding answers regarding his whereabouts, Marak said, “We heard the Chief Minister was roaming and being a CM, it was his responsibility to take salute.”
It is worth noting that Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar took the salute in the state capital, whilst the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, Thomas Sangma, presided over the ceremony in Tura.
Adding to the speculation, the chief minister kept mum on his social media handles regarding his participation in the day's festivities.
