Zeliang to be the new Nagaland CM

Kohima: Nagaland Minister of Planning and Coordination, Evaluation, Geology and Mining, TR Zeliang was elected as the new Leader of the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF)-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland Legislatures’ Party and Chief Minister-designate.

The new leader was unanimously elected the leader after a meeting of DAN Legislators after incumbent Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s landslide win in the Lok Sabha elections, the result for which was declared on Friday.

The meeting was attended Rio, NPF president Dr Shurhozelie along with party workers and 52 DAN legislators, including NCP and Independent MLAs.

DAN alliance partners BJP, NCP, JDU and Independent legislators reaffirmed their support and cooperation to Zeliang’s leadership.

In his acceptance speech, Zeliang expressed gratitude to Rio, Shurhozelie and party leaders and said, “We will carry forward the legacy and vision left to us for the welfare of the people.” Rio who left for Delhi on Saturday with some Cabinet colleagues to meet the BJP leaders at the centre said that NPF led DAN Government has committed to the Naga people to help bring honourable solution to the protracted Naga political issue.

Both new leaders of the state – MP and CM designate also asserted to pursue the Naga political issue vigorously with the centre and called upon all Naga political group to unite. (PTI)
