Pennsylvania, Feb 3: On Monday, Punxsutawney Phil, the iconic groundhog at Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania, saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter rather than an early spring.
Thousands attended the annual event, which became widely popular after the 1993 Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day. The tradition has deep historical roots, tracing back to European agricultural practices that marked the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
Pennsylvania Germans had long celebrated the emergence of hibernating animals—originally badgers or bears—to forecast weather, later substituting the native groundhog. References to the practice date to an 1841 diary noting early February groundhog sightings among German-descended families in Pennsylvania.
Punxsutawney became a central hub for Groundhog Day celebrations in the late 1800s, with locals enjoying picnics, hunting, and groundhog-themed festivities.
Other areas in Pennsylvania, such as Quarryville, host their own celebrations with Octoraro Orphie, whose supporters claim he predicts the weather more accurately than Phil.
Over time, safety and decorum measures have been introduced, including a ban on alcohol at Gobbler’s Knob following past rowdy crowds and incidents. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, whistle pigs, or “grundsau” in Pennsylvania Dutch, are herbivorous members of the squirrel family.
They can be eaten, though it is uncommon; hunters annually harvest tens of thousands, describing the meat as gamey but edible. Groundhog clubs and lodges, dating back to the 1930s, preserve Pennsylvania German culture and language, often enforcing Pennsylvania Dutch at meetings. Their unifying tradition remains the prediction of winter length via groundhog behavior.
Despite Phil’s fame, his reliability is questionable. He has historically predicted extended winter more often than early spring, and studies by the National Centers for Environmental Information show he was correct only three out of the past ten years.
The celebration remains largely symbolic, blending folklore, humor, and cultural heritage rather than providing a scientifically accurate weather forecast. It offers participants a brief, communal respite from modern life and continues to attract attention as a quirky American tradition rooted in European customs. (AP)
