TURA: With the timely detection of two improvised explosive devices (IED) planted on a road in the remote Chokpot area of Garo Hills, an ambush attempt on security forces was thwarted on Tuesday.

Two IEDs fitted into pressure cookers and buried in the middle of the road were found by a police team after an extensive search in the morning. The two devices, packed inside large pressure cookers and wired, had been placed underneath the soil at Dagal Dopgre, eight kms from Chokpot.

The Dagal Dopgre road connected Chokpot with Kakija and was used daily by both police vehicles and public transport. Public buses, coal trucks and police vehicles pass through the stretch every day.

Police teams had launched an operation following reports of movement of GNLA militants in the area a day earlier. The South Garo Hills police informed that the Chokpot command of the GNLA was suspected to have planted the devices with plans to explode them during the movement of police personnel.
