JOWAI, Feb 14: Thousands of people from Elaka Raliang and nearby areas in the West Jaintia Hills district came together for the Leh Niam Pastieh and traditional ritual dance, which was organised by the Raij Raliang on Friday.
Celebrated with great grandeur and spiritual fervour, the event took place at the market area of Raliang village, drawing crowds to witness a ceremony held only once every 10 or 15 years.
Speaking to the media persons, the Doloi of Elaka Raliang stated that during a Doloi’s term of service, one usually gets the opportunity to take part in this ritual only once or at most twice.
He said that this ceremony is unlike other rituals performed annually, as it is conducted only once in 10 or 15 years.
He also mentioned that several clans participated in the offering of sacrifices as part of the ritual.
He further informed that a grand community feast would be held following the completion of the ceremony.
The occasion was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar as the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included Mookaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh, Doloi of Elaka Raliang C Lyngdoh, Pastieh Committee Chairman E Lyngdoh, Secretary I Suchiang, along with other Dolois, MDCs, village heads and prominent citizens from across the Jaintia Hills.
In his speech, Dhar praised the Raij Raliang for preserving and faithfully following the age-old customs and traditions handed down from their ancestors.
He expressed immense joy in witnessing such traditional ritual dances that reflect and preserve the indigenous identity and cultural heritage of the people.
