WTT: Desai-Ghorpade reach mixed doubles final
CHENNAI, Feb 14: Fourth seeds Harmeet Desai and Yashaswini Ghorpade sealed a spot in the mixed doubles final with ease, while G Sathiyan registered a hard-fought win to reach the men’s singles quarterfinals in the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 here on Saturday.Desai and Ghorpade were in total command in the all-Indian mixed doubles semifinal, beating wildcard holders Payas Jain and Syndrela Das 3-0 (11-9 11-6 11-9). They will now face second seeds Eduard Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs of Romania, who advanced after third seeds Oh Junsung of Korea and Miku Nagasaki of Japan conceded the match while trailing 1-2.Earlier, Sathiyan kept Indian hopes alive in the men’s singles as he fought back from a 1-2 deficit to beat Ionescu 3-2 (9-11 11-3 10-12 11-7 11-5) to advance to quarterfinals.He will now face Czechia’s Lubomir Jancarik, who got the better of India’s Manush Shah 3-1 (11-4 13-11 5-11 13-11).Meanwhile, Sehit Suravajjula’s giant killing run came to an end when he went down 1-3 (6-11 12-10 13-15 7-11) against top seed Oh Junsung.The Korean, however, has given a walkover to Frenchman Thibault Poret in the quarterfinals after he injured himself during the mixed doubles semifinals.India’s challenge in women’s singles also came to an end after qualifier Nithya Mani lost 1-3 (11-9 5-11 6-11 8-11) against Chinese Taipei’s fourth seed Cheng I-Ching in the pre-quarterfinals. Mahindra Racing’s Mortara secures podium in Jeddah
MUMBAI, Feb 14: Mahindra Racing, the only Indian outfit competing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, climbed to second in the overall Team Championship standings after a podium finish at the Jeddah E-Prix, where Edoardo Mortara secured second place in Round 4.The result builds on last season’s fourth-place championship finish.“As a founding Formula E team, Mahindra Racing continues to establish itself as a serious contender on the global electric racing stage,” said Mahindra Racing in a statement.“Following the result, Mahindra Racing now stands P2 overall in the Team Championship standings, highlighting the team’s growing consistency and front-running pace this season. Mortara’s performance also elevates him to P3 in the Drivers’ Championship,” it added. (PTI)
Delhi Open: Karan, Dhamne handed singles wild cards
NEW DELHI, Feb 14: Davis Cupper Karan Singh and Manas Dhamne have been awarded main draw singles wild cards for the ATP Delhi Open, which begins at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.The Delhi Lawn Tennis Association also confirmed main draw wild cards for Digvijay Pratap Singh, who was part of India’s Davis Cup squad as a reserve during the recent tie against the Netherlands, along with four qualifying wild cards.Karan’s inclusion comes on the back of his role in India’s victorious Davis Cup tie in Bengaluru, while 18-year-old Manas is widely regarded as one of the brightest young prospects in Indian tennis. Karan Singh and Digvijay Pratap Singh played important roles in the recent Davis Cup campaign, and this wild card is a recognition of their contribution to the team’s success,” DLTA said in a release.“Manas Dhamne is one of the most exciting young talents in the country today, and it is important that we provide him with opportunities at events like the Delhi Open to help him grow and gain valuable experience at a higher level.” The DLTA has also awarded qualifying singles wild cards to Nitin Kumar Sinha, Ishaque Eqbal.
