ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Colombo, Feb 14: It may be eleven against eleven on paper, but when India national cricket team lock horns with Pakistan national cricket team on Sunday in the T20 World Cup, the outcome could well hinge on four high-stakes individual duels.
The calendar reads February 15, 2026. For many, memories will drift back to September 28 last year, when Tilak Varma orchestrated a nerve-jangling final-over win in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan. Several of the protagonists from that unforgettable night will be back in the spotlight. And once again, the margins are likely to be razor-thin.
Here are four match-ups that could quietly, yet decisively, shape the contest.

Bumrah vs Farhan

Few moments from the Asia Cup stirred social media quite like Sahibzada Farhan taking on Jasprit Bumrah. The Pakistan opener managed something few have done in T20 internationals — clear the ropes against India’s premier fast bowler, not once but three times across the tournament, including in the final.
Since then, even New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has joined that exclusive club, striking Bumrah for three sixes in a bilateral series.
The question now is simple: what adjustments has Bumrah made, and can Farhan repeat his audacity on the big stage?
India had deployed Bumrah in extended three-over bursts inside the powerplay during the Asia Cup. More recently, however, his role has shifted to shorter opening spells. If their face-off comes early, expect sparks. If not, it may be a brief but explosive chapter.

Shaheen vs Abhishek

Few new-ball specialists in T20 cricket rival Shaheen Shah Afridi. With 25 wickets in the opening over of T20Is — joint-most in history alongside UAE’s Junaid Siddique — he remains a menace with the brand-new ball.
Standing in his way is Abhishek Sharma, who has smashed more first-over sixes than anyone since making his T20I debut.
When these two met in the Asia Cup, the advantage lay firmly with the Indian batter. Abhishek plundered 24 runs off 13 balls in early exchanges and was never dismissed by Shaheen across their meetings.
There is, however, a subplot. Abhishek returns after recovering from a stomach bug that ruled him out of India’s previous game. Whether that interruption affects his rhythm against a charged-up Shaheen could define the tone of the innings.

Ayub vs Kishan

Ishan Kishan’s return to international cricket has been emphatic. Averaging over 49 and striking at more than 220 in his last six innings, he has dismantled bowling attacks with fearless intent.
Yet, there is a subtle vulnerability Pakistan may consider exploiting. Kishan’s record against spin in the powerplay is modest — 85 runs off 77 balls across his T20I career, with four dismissals.
Even during his recent purple patch, spinners operating in the first six overs have managed to slow him down.
Pakistan have often introduced part-time offspinner Saim Ayub early in the innings, a tactic they skipped in seam-friendly conditions against the Netherlands. But at the spin-assisting R.
Premadasa Stadium, the temptation to revert to that plan could be strong.Kishan’s dismissal against Namibia — undone first ball by offspin after dominating pace — will not have gone unnoticed. Ayub, ranked No. 2 among T20I allrounders, bowled economically in the Asia Cup final and could once again play a pivotal role if entrusted with the new ball.

Abrar vs Suryakumar

If the powerplay promises drama, the middle overs could bring intrigue.
Abrar Ahmed has emerged as Pakistan’s most reliable spin threat. Since the previous T20 World Cup, he boasts one of the best economy rates in overs 7 to 16 among bowlers in this tournament, alongside an impressive wicket tally in that phase. That is precisely where Suryakumar Yadav thrives. After a lean run during last year’s Asia Cup, the Indian batter has rediscovered his rhythm, highlighted by a match-winning unbeaten 84 against the USA in the group stage. The sweep — in all its variations — remains his signature stroke, particularly against legspin. Over his T20I career, Suryakumar has scored at a staggering strike rate exceeding 200 against that style, using sweeps and scoops to manipulate fields and dismantle plans. (Agencies)
