SHILLONG, Feb 15: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent H. Pala on Sunday asserted that the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state remains fully secure, maintaining that prevailing concerns about illegal influx from the neighbouring country stem largely from perception rather than ground reality.
His statement comes amid heightened political debate over developments in Bangladesh and speculation about a possible influx and potential security implications into the northeastern states, especially Meghalaya which shares a 443-km border with the neighbouring country.
As per reports, Pala indicated that there is no cause for alarm in Meghalaya. He maintained that the border is fully secure and suggested that apprehensions regarding insecurity are more perceptual than factual.
Emphasising the broader diplomatic context, he noted that India and Bangladesh share friendly relations, and while isolated voices may attempt to create anxiety, the larger population across the border continues to value good neighbourly ties.
He further stated that security along the frontier is not the responsibility of armed forces alone.
According to him, the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), state machinery and, most importantly, residents of border areas collectively contribute to guarding the boundary and maintaining stability.
Pala stressed that there is no prevailing problem along Meghalaya’s international border and underscored that fear should not shape public perception in the absence of concrete threats.
