SHILLONG: After Laitumkhrah, the State Government may soon start the construction of Mothphran junction which is by far one of the most congested places of Shillong city.

Sources said that the sanction for the project has already come, which is around forty lakh and if everything goes well, the Government may soon start the construction.

The Government however is not in any hurry to start the project since the Government wants to take all the concerned stakeholders into confidence before starting the construction of the Motphran point.

The government is planning to revamp the Motphran junction by shifting the monuments located in the area to another location. The matter has also been discussed with the PWD.

However, the biggest challenge for the State Government is the monument which exists right in the middle of the road and it has a historical significance since it contains the name of the freedom fighters of the State.

The bridge at Motphran is another issue that requires immediate attention as the old bridge has become a danger to passersby.

Sources however informed that IIT, Guwahati will conduct a security audit of the bridge to see if the bridge is safe or not.

A study on the longevity of the bridge had already been done two years ago by the PWD and the department had termed the bridge ‘unsafe’. “The PWD had proposed to shift the bridge but it didn’t work out due to land acquisition problem and other resistance from several quarters.
