ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Colombo, Feb 22: Pakistan entered the record books for an unusual reason after their T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight fixture against New Zealand was abandoned due to persistent rain in Colombo.
With the match called off without a ball being bowled, Pakistan became the team with the most abandoned T20 International matches in men’s cricket. The washout marked their seventh incomplete T20I, placing them at the top of the list.Ireland and New Zealand follow with six abandoned matches each, while India and the Netherlands have experienced four washouts apiece in the format.
Saturday’s game also carried a notable distinction — it was Pakistan’s first-ever abandoned match in T20 World Cup history. Although they now lead the overall T20I list for rain-hit or abandoned fixtures, this was the first time such a scenario unfolded for them in the tournament itself.
The no-result handed both Pakistan and New Zealand one point each in Group 2, adding an early twist to the Super Eight stage. With other strong contenders in the group, shared points could prove decisive in the race for semifinal qualification. While the statistical milestone may appear trivial at first glance, its timing could carry significant weight in the broader context of the tournament. In a Super Eight stage where margins are slender and net run rate often becomes the silent judge, the loss of a full contest denies both sides a vital opportunity to build momentum, sharpen combinations and gain a psychological edge. For Pakistan in particular, the washout not only adds an unwanted record to their T20I history but also compresses the pressure heading into their remaining fixtures, where there will be little room for error.
