SHILLONG, Feb 24: Voice of the People Party MLA Ardent M. Basaiawmoit on Tuesday raised serious alarm in the Assembly over the poor quality of infrastructure works in the state.
He pointed directly to glaring defects in high-profile projects, including visible cracks and structural problems in the dome of the Inter-State Bus Terminus at Mawlai Mawiong and freshly-laid roads where the blacktop could reportedly be peeled away by hand.
These widely reported cases, he argued, expose shoddy workmanship and cast serious doubt on the durability of assets built with taxpayers’ money.
Basaiawmoit stressed that public infrastructure is meant to serve communities for decades, yet repeated instances of substandard execution defeat that very purpose. He insisted that workmanship and quality control must never be compromised during project implementation.
Going further, the VPP leader alleged that rather than holding erring contractors accountable, people who draw attention to these flaws are facing intimidation, including the filing of legal cases against critics. He claimed that some elected representatives have even stepped in to defend the contractors involved.
Terming the situation unjust, Basaiawmoit urged the government to treat the matter with the gravity it deserves and to guarantee that quality remains non-negotiable in every public works project across the state.
