KHLIEHRAIT, Feb 26: Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, the main government healthcare facility in East Jaiñtia Hills, has allegedly become a public health concern due to damaged drainage systems and leaking toilet tanks.
The foul sewage odour has affected residents of Khliehriat West Village, disrupting daily life and raising fears of waterborne and airborne diseases. Despite repeated complaints to Medical Superintendent Dr. A Lakiang, no action was taken.
The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, submitted a formal complaint to District Medical and Health Officer Dr. D. Shylla, seeking immediate repairs and proper maintenance.
A joint inspection led by JNC General Secretary S. Sumer, the DMHO, and local leaders on Thursday confirmed the severity of the sanitation problem. Dr. Shylla assured that necessary repairs would be carried out without delay.
The JNC stated it will closely monitor the situation and warned of escalating the matter to higher authorities, including the State Health Department and the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, if prompt action is not taken.
