SHILLONG, March 1: The Jaintia Coordination Committee on Reservation Policy (JCCRP) will hold a crucial meeting on Monday to finalise its stand on the state’s reservation framework.
Chairman of the JCCRP, Jersom Shylla, said the committee would arrive at a decision after deliberations and communicate the outcome thereafter. He stated that he would also convene a meeting with pressure groups from Jaintia Hills and other stakeholders to discuss the issue before forwarding any resolution to the government.
Shylla said whatever resolution is adopted will be formally submitted to the state government.
Earlier, in a representation submitted to the Secretary of the Expert Committee on Reservation Policy, the JCCRP had sought an 80 per cent open reservation category to be competed among the three major tribes of the state—Khasi, Jaintia and Garo. The proposal was placed before the committee during the consultation process and was not part of any fresh demand.
In the same representation, the JCCRP had also called for the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy to be legislated into a statute, with clear provisions defining both employment and educational opportunities.
The committee had reasoned at the time that such a framework would create a more inclusive yet competitive system, allowing selection based on merit and qualifications while ensuring representation of the state’s major tribal communities.
