City college signs MoU for global placements

SHILLONG, March 7: St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emporium Training & Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. (ETCPL) to provide skill development and global placement opportunities for graduates and unemployed youths in Meghalaya. ETCPL is a leading training institute specialising in aviation, hospitality and cruise line careers. It is accredited under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and is associated with the National Skill Development Corporation and the Skill India initiative. Under the agreement, the ETCPL will serve as the official placement partner for the college. The institute will provide professional skills training and recruitment opportunities in more than 20 countries, focusing on sectors such as luxury hospitality, international cruise lines and aviation. As part of the collaboration, ETCPL will organise campus interviews with leading airlines, international airports and global hotel chains in association with the college. Don Bosco College hosts youth debate and mock parliament

SHILLONG, March 7: Don Bosco College Byndihati on Friday hosted the District-level Yuva Connect Debate Competition and the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament, drawing participants from across the district to deliberate on national issues. During the inaugural session, filmmaker Simi Khongtiang was felicitated as a ‘Youth Icon.’ Khongtiang, recently named Best Director at the Northeast Prag Cine Awards 2024 for her film Ka Chithi, delivered a keynote on the themes of “Vande Mataram” and “Viksit Bharat @2047.” She urged students to integrate their cultural heritage with modern aspirations during an interactive session. In the Yuva Connect Debate, Sunanda Das was declared the winner, with Wandaphi Pala securing the runner-up position. The afternoon session featured the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament, a simulation of legislative procedures. Shri Krison Langstang, MDC of 26-Sumer Constituency, attended as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Langstang emphasized the importance of public speaking and encouraged students to overcome stage fright to contribute effectively to public discourse. Ten performers were selected to advance to the state-level competition. Duniwanyoo Lamare secured first place, followed by Juliana Lyngdoh in second and Avirginia Dkhar in third.

Governor unveils four books authored by NEHU professors

SHILLONG, March 7: Governor CH Vijayashankar on Saturday released four books authored by Prof Bikika Laloo Tariang and Prof Andriana Pyngrope of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) at Lok Bhavan. The event was attended by the Principal Secretary to the Governor, H.C. Chaudhary. The titles include Dad and the Salesman by Bikika Laloo Tariang; Indigenous Games Played in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya co-authored by Andriana Pyngrope, Bikika Laloo Tariang, and Rumika Talang; Mandatory Poison and Other Shillong Things by Bikika Laloo Tariang; and Shillong: Glimpses of a City Through the Lens of an Amateur Photographer by Bikika Laloo Tariang. The Governor congratulated the authors for documenting the culture, traditions, and daily life of the state. He noted that such works are essential for preserving Meghalaya’s heritage and identity for future generations. He added that recording indigenous practices and local experiences helps strengthen cultural awareness and keeps the youth connected to their roots. Prof Tariang expressed gratitude to the Governor for supporting scholarly and creative pursuits in the state.

EJH hosts science exhibition

KHLIEHRIAT, March 7: The Office of the District School Education Officer (DSEO), East Jaintia Hills, organised a district-level Science, Mathematics, and Environment Exhibition at Jaintia Eastern College on Thursday. Held under the theme “STEM for Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” the exhibition aimed to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and the practical application of innovative ideas among secondary school students. Addressing the gathering, DSEO R Diengdoh described the event as a reflection of the students’ curiosity and passion for learning. He emphasised the role of educators in nurturing young minds and providing opportunities for innovation, noting that education is fundamental to shaping the nation’s future. Students from various schools across the district presented models on diverse topics, including bricks made from melted plastic and sand, integrated solar-wind energy systems, automated traffic management for trucks, laser security systems, and rainwater harvesting. Suhana Paul of Ambrose Memorial Secondary School, Khliehriat, was declared the winner of the exhibition. Peter Arsalann Pyngrope of Khliehriat Higher Secondary School and Benaiah Gaddiel Sutnga of Little Star Secondary School, Ladrymbai, secured the second and third prizes, respectively. The programme was attended by e-District Manager Roibok Pohrmen, Assistant Professor Nishwa Rymbai, and other district officials who distributed certificates, mementos, and cash awards to the participants and winners.

EJH launches HPV vax drive

KHLIEHRIAT, March 7: The Office of the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO), East Jaintia Hills, launched the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign and organised a community health camp at Pamra-Paithlu PHC on Saturday. Held under the theme “Every Mother Matters, Every Child Counts,” the programme was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner A Nongbri, District Immunisation Officer Dr NP Suchiang, and other health officials. In his address, Nongbri urged the public to utilise government healthcare services and advocated for the HPV vaccine as a preventive measure against cervical cancer. He also advised residents to remain vigilant regarding food safety and contamination. Suchiang stated that the outreach programme aims to bring essential healthcare directly to rural areas to help reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. She explained that the HPV vaccine is primarily administered to girls aged 14 to protect them from cervical cancer, adding that the vaccination drive will continue for the next three months. The health camp provided a range of services, including HIV/STI testing, NCD screening, Ayushman Bharat registration, and RBSK screenings. Awareness sessions on food adulteration were also conducted for the local residents, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers in attendance.
