SHILLONG, March 13: The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class has ordered an immediate stay on all construction activity on land disputed between Shillong Club Ltd. and individuals claiming to represent the Thankhiew Laikpoh Clan.
In Case No. 18 (T) 2026, the court observed that ongoing construction and the erection of structures on the property would alter the nature of the land and potentially render the trial futile.
Accordingly, the court directed the opposite party to stop all further construction. The In-charge of the Pasteur Beat House has been tasked with ensuring compliance and must submit a report to the court by March 26, 2026.
Shillong Club Ltd. maintains that the land is part of a 10.19-acre area covered under a 1923 perpetual lease executed between the Thankhiew Laikpoh Clan and the Club. The Club stated it has been in continuous possession of the land for several decades.
The Club has communicated the court’s directive to the relevant police authorities and expressed confidence that the order will be strictly enforced. In a statement, the Club administrator reiterated its commitment to the judicial process and urged all parties to respect the court’s decision to maintain the status quo while the matter remains under consideration.
