SHILLONG, March 13: Members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Mawlai Circle on Friday pushed back 17 migrant workers allegedly working without valid documentation at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus.
The action was part of the organisation’s ‘Sier Lapalang Operation’ (SLO), aimed at identifying workers employed without mandatory labour cards. HYC Mawlai Circle organising secretary S. Marwein stated that this drive marks the start of the operation for the year, with intensified checks planned across the Mawlai area in the coming days.
Marwein appealed to contractors to prioritise hiring local Khasi workers. “Many local youths are unemployed because contractors prefer cheaper migrant labour,” Marwein said, adding that contractors should heed this appeal to ensure their projects proceed smoothly.
Similarly, the HYC Mawphlang Area Unit conducted inspections at Public Health Engineering (PHE) department worksites and at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mawphlang. Led by unit president Bijoy Nonglang, the group identified several migrant labourers without proper documents and directed them to leave the sites immediately.
